Curriculum Offer

At Christ Church, out curriculum is also underpinned by our vision.

WE LOVE learning.

WE ACT responsibly.

WE WALK with pride and in excellence.

INTRODUCTION

Christ Church School is dedicated to offering a comprehensive education tailored to the needs of our pupils and their families.  Our curriculum is designed to prepare students for success within our school and beyond, incorporating the statutory requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum.  Enhanced by various experiential learning opportunities, our curriculum is built to foster intellectual growth, social development and cultural enrichment.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

INTENT

The curriculum at Christ Church School is developed to meet the unique needs of our pupils and community. We emphasise essential knowledge and contextual understanding, ensuring that our pupils are well-prepared for future educational stages and their roles as responsible citizens. Our curriculum is inclusive, aspirational, and designed to extend pupils’ horizons, enabling them to achieve personal success.

We are a knowledge-rich school; our curriculum is delivered through the discrete teaching of the National Curriculum subjects, which is aimed at pupils mastering subject-specific (declarative) knowledge, whilst also gaining skills as an outcome of procedural knowledge: our leaders express a desire for both to be developed.

Instruction and how this is delivered, through evidence-informed pedagogical strategies, that take into consideration pupils’ cognitive load.  This is reflected in the strategies that we have embedded into our practice to empower children to have the autonomy and articulacy to engage in activities that challenge pupils’ thinking, as well as their physical ability. We recognise that learning is defined as a change in long-term memory and we have, therefore, incorporated approaches and strategies that help pupils to integrate new knowledge into the long-term memory, and make enduring connections that foster understanding and result in our pupils ‘knowing more and remembering more.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our teaching methodologies are grounded in evidence-based practices and are designed to cater to the diverse learning needs of our students.  All lessons are inclusive of substantive and disciplinary knowledge, that when mastered lead to fluency

Key strategies include:

  • Adaptive instruction
  • Use of technology to enhance learning experiences
  • Collaborative and project-based learning to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Continuous professional development for teachers to ensure high-quality instruction
  • Integration of strategies to manage cognitive load and promote long-term memory retention

Funds of Knowledge

At Christ Church, we acknowledge and celebrate our children's heritage. Through becoming more open about our own experiences and literacy practices, we hope to build more reciprocal relationships and find out more about our children's individual passions, preferences, interests and practices both: within and beyond school.

'This approach acknowledges how every home brings with it identities, dispositions, stories, objects, artefacts, memories, languages and resources. This implies a wealth model of literacy by which families' cultural capital can be drawn upon when planning'

Pahl and Rowsell, 2005:54

We believe that through creating a more responsive and flexible curricular, we will enable children to draw on their 'funds of knowledge' in school, thus promoting increased engagement and motivation. We hope children will show more independence and commitment as learners and lead the learning, with their questions and interests.
